Painting: Acrylic

Artist Statement

Based on the teachings of her father, from an early age, Sherry developed an eye for noticing fine details and color in nature and the world around her. He taught her to ponder, observe, and take the time to appreciate these details and the wonderment of their creation. It is with this lens that she creates her artwork.

“If one closely observes, there’s a song in every bird, a life in every ocean wave, a dance in every fish and a story within every living being.”

Bio

Initially planning on pursuing a career in graphic design, Sherry Westenbroek attended the University of Michigan, graduating with multiple degrees - Fine Arts, History, Science, and Education. Her passion for working with kids blossomed and her mission became to help students develop a love of learning, creating, and thinking. After 35 years working with kids of varied ages, she retired from education. At this crossroad, she gratefully had more time to pursue her personal love of art and creating. Sherry began to study painting with professional artist Edi Olsen and set about to experiment with various techniques. This led to her development of her own personal style of using a pallet knife to create her vibrant paintings. Many of these pieces are created by layering paint in various colors to achieve a desired effect. For realistic paintings and specific commissioned pieces, she uses a realistic brush technique. Sherry sincerely hopes that the joy she finds in painting is reflected in her works and that the viewer can share this joy.
