Philip Stork

Photography

I have had one foot in the artistic world and the other in the scientific world through my adult life. I developed my artistic style as a cartoonist for the Harvard Lampoon and as an animator for Hanna-Barbera and other animation houses in Studio City, California. My scientific career has been centered at the Vollum Institute, OHSU, focusing on molecular and cellular biology. My science has inspired me to create abstracted images of cells and biological structures captured in pencil or pastel. Many have been featured on the covers of scientific journals, monographs, and textbooks. Most recently, I illustrated a book recently published (Random House, MIT press) that provides a lay person's summary of the history of pandemics and vaccines.

My works emphasize both real and imagined landscapes, captured in colored pencil, ink, pastel, and photography. I work from my studio in NW Portland, Oregon, where the landscapes provide endless starting points for my inspiration. I have recently embarked on new project of stylized (artistically rendered) photographic images I have taken in Oregon.  Each of these works is created from an optimized photographic image, which is printed on impermeable paper. This allows the inks to flow and mix to create surreal and fanciful images. When the desired image is achieved, the image is digitally captured. Each final image is printed in a limited edition on fine art paper.
