Artist Statement

Brenda fires most of her work in a Phoenix Fast Fire. The kiln has 35 cubic feet of ware space and takes about six hours to load and 16-20 hours to fire. The fire must be maintainted the whole time with a goal temperature of around 2350°F. After firing Brenda will let the kiln cool at least three days before opening the kiln to see the results.

Brenda uses fallen trees, branches and scrap wood to fire her kiln. Much of the wood is Doug Fir and Cherry which is abundant in the Pacific NW. During the firing the fire box is rodded and fluffed so the ash will fly throughout the kiln landing of the pots to create the beautiful speckles and ash drips that are sought after in a wood fired kiln.

Brenda creates mostly functional work and considers the kiln a partner as she has to put trust in the process and the kiln puts the final touches on her pieces.
